Ubuntu 9.10 is out and I re-installed my desktop with it. I was previously running 8.10 on this desktop and run 9.04 on others and 8.04LTS on a server.
I am, for the most part, pleased with the changes. I finally took the plunge and moved to the 64-bit version so I could all of my 8GB of memory and this time that has caused ZERO problems (so far anyway.) The interface and control pannels work a little more cleanly and it is much, much faster than 8.10 was on my main desktop. I get the feeling that it isn't such a massive speed increase over 9.04, but as I've not yet run them both on identical hardware I can't make a definitive statement on that.
The one hickup, which others have posted about on the net too, was getting X to run. Problems from the start. The install left me with with a flickering/blank display. Having had issues before with my Nvidia card I purged the drivers and re-installed with the latest binary drivers from Nvidia. Then X came right up, although I had to mess with graphics settings because one of my two ViewSonic monitors never returns and EDID code (this has always been a problem though.)
One last note- Karmic looks like it's going to kick butt on laptops and netbooks. A lot of changes have been put in to mobility features (which my desktop doesn't need) and presence (I'm not into instant messaging). If I had some free cash I might just get myself one of the new ARM based netbooks. As it is I think my Dell D420 is finally moving to Ubuntu now and Windows is going to be relegated to a VirtualBox instance for the few times I still need it (mostly for Visio, Project, and the occasional Office document that uses odd features not supported by OpenOffice.)
