One reason small businesses may be so lax with Internet safety and security is because they feel it isn't a priority to their clients. Only 6 percent of respondents said they feared losing customer data and 42 percent said they believed their customers were concerned with their IT security.

 The United States and the European Union have agreed to treatcybersecurity , cyber crime and data protection as international issues, cooperatively developing polices based on shared values.

NIST would be responsible for developing a plan to coordinate the government’s work with international organizations developing cybersecurity standards under the bill approved by the House Science and Technology Committee’s Technology and Innovation Subcommittee.

The White House will introduce new tools and metrics for measuring and managing the federal government's cybersecurity efforts, federal CIO Vivek Kundra said in testimony to Congress.

"Cyber can be awfully abstract, but the internet has become the new medium by which crimes are committed: child pornography, sex tourism, exploitation," Napolitano said. The visit was part of Napolitano's effort to promote her department's designation of October as Cybersecurity Awareness Month. Homeland Security has made a concerted effort to ramp up resources and expertise in response to a surge in Internet crime. 

Cybersecurity affects almost everyone, whether they realize it or not. Stories emerge regularly about stolen identities and hackers accessing personal information via the Internet. The FBI reports cybercriminals make more money than drug traffickers.

Dartmouth has teamed up with the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA) to promote National Cyber Security Awareness Month during October. Dartmouth experts from the Department of Computing Services, the Institute for Security, Technology, and Society(ISTS), and the Institute for Information Infrastructure Protection (I3P) are rallying around the opportunity to drive home messages about keeping computers safe from phishers, thieves, and hackers. The I3P is a national consortium of 27 member institutions, managed by Dartmouth, devoted to strengthening the digital infrastructure of the U.S.

The Obama administration gives the Department of Homeland Security approval to hire as many as 1,000 cyber-security experts during the next three years. According to DHS, officials are aiming to fill a number of different positions in areas such as vulnerability detection and network and systems engineering.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano will launch October as Cybersecurity Awareness Month.
