Information in its many forms has become a critical University asset, impacting nearly all of the University's core missions. Information sharing and use is generally considered a right of the members of the University community, and to a large extent, of the public at large. Because of this, Rutgers has gone to some length to ensure essentially public information access and availability. However, because of advances in technology and communications and the University's decentralized nature, it is increasingly difficult to ensure that this information is provided in such a way that its integrity is ensured. With this in mind, it is important that all departments and individuals take appropriate steps to create a secure computing environment.

As users of information technology everyone is expected to read and adhere to the university's acceptable use and other relative policies. Basic security procedures do not vary from computer to computer or between operating systems. There are the basic procedures that all computer users are expected to follow. Recommended best practices described apply to everyone.

Developing a plan for securing university assets and systems is the foundation for a successful department IT infrastructure. Developing an IT security plan establishes requirements for physical and logical controls of hardware, software, data, environment, as well as social engineering and privacy. State and federal laws have included regulations which require secure systems and the protection of non-public personal information (NPPI)
