Briefly, a copyright regulates the use of a particular expression of an idea or information and may subsist in a wide range of creative, intellectual, or artistic forms or "works". Therefore, a copyright violation is a infringement on those rights.
- The Digital Millenium Copyright Act of 1998 and the University Copyright Policy governs the handling of copyright violations.
- If a takedown notice is forwarded, the expectation is that the material will be removed from the Internet immediately. The poster of the material has opportunity to demonstrate that the take down notice was in error--- either that s/he had permission to post the material or the take down notice did not come from the copyright owner or an authorized representative.
