Open Mail Relay

An open mail relay allows email to be passed through it and is often abused for the sending of spam. It tends to be a configuration issue. Review these recommendations when a host has been identified as a possible open mail relay.
- Secure the host against open mail relay (also known as third party relay). See Application Note: How to secure your mail system against third-party relay.
- Test the host. This is best accomplished outside of RUNet, since some hosts choose to permit mail relay from other rutgers.edu sites. Caution: Request written authorization for the testing from your management prior to launching any tests. Sites that offer testing services include Mail Relay Testing from the Network Abuse Clearing House. See also the DSBL Test Program Suite.
- Check the various blacklists for your host IP address. If they are listed, follow the site instructions for removal of the hosts.
