McAfee Endpoint Encryption is presently available for the Windows environment. However, other possibilities are also available.
- Truecrypt is free open-source disk encryption software for Windows Vista/XP/2000 and Linux. Caveat emptor: Review the FAQ document for limitations. A primary concern is the inability to recover forgotten passwords from the Truecrypt volume; it is necessary to create and preserve a rescue disk when the volume is encrypted.
- The Encrypting File System (EFS) is native to Windows Vista. The robust version requires Trusted Platform Module (TPM) security hardware. See Hardware requirements for BitLocker Drive Encryption.
